"Rush For President" is an interactive multi-disciplinary installation. It was specifically created for a show called “Everybody In” curated by Derrick Adams. Gallery director Derek Adams appears in the poster campaigning for the artist running for president. The viewers can help themselves to campaign buttons and contribute campaign donations to world peace, which I anonymously donated at the end of the exhibition. I chose the flag sewn by Betsy Ross because of her strong input on the design and placement of the stars, suggesting unity. It’s a symbol of collaboration that draws critical links between her labor and contribution. This satirical piece ponders the semiotics of gender and race in a contemporary political discourse while creating visual representations during the 2008 national election and more recently in our 2016 election. It also gestures towards exploiting the gallery encounter of participatory democracy.
