Days After I
2011 - 2012
Digital archival print on velvet rag paper, Edition 1 of 5, 1 AP
16" h x 13" w

After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, I was compelled to ask the technician for a handful of colorful stickers that were used to mark the nipples prior to imaging. I wondered if these skin markers were purposefully bright and cheery so as to distract from this procedure and its possible consequences. Reflecting on this in my studio, I began to paste the skin markers on my breast as the techs had done at the radiology center. But instead of simply marking the nipple, I found this exercise more akin to sculpting my body. The skin markers became a means to map my own body and the series Days After is the illustration of this journey.
