Days Between
2021-2022
Wood, metal gold leaf, mirror, polyurethane, and acrylic
28” h x 28” w x 3” d

"Days Between" addresses the cyclical nature of life. The circular shape has no beginning or end, referencing the eternal succession of birth, death, and rebirth. The alternating dark blue (almost black) and mirrored surfaces in the coffin-shaped forms reference the Buddhist concept of the bardo: the transitional process of becoming. In the mirrored surfaces, the viewers can see their reflection, thereby inserting themselves into this cycle. On the outside of the sculpture is gold metal leaf, inverting the negative association of death and infusing it with the preciousness of human rebirth. Life, death, and rebirth are all sojourns of human existence and the body is a vessel in which we inhabit only temporarily.
